In 1988, American Municipal Power (then AMP-Ohio) purchased a 70 percent interest in the coal-fired generating plant owned by Elkem Metals Company, located along the Ohio River near Marietta.
Originally constructed in the 1950s, the plant was renamed in memory of the late Richard Gorsuch, who served as our president from 1983 until his death in 1987. In 1999, we purchased the remaining interests in the plant.
Under our operation, the plant has a nameplate capacity of 213 MW. Over the years, we have invested in control technologies, including a continuous emissions monitoring system to reduce plant emissions. Output from the plant helps meet a portion of the energy needs for 48 participating member municipal electric systems. In addition, the plant provides process steam in support of several industries located nearby.
In 2008, the AMP Board of Trustees approved a resolution stating the Gorsuch facility will cease operations in its present configuration when the proposed American Municipal Power Generating Station (AMPGS) goes on-line (projected to be 2014). The capacity of the Gorsuch facility was included in the AMPGS project, making this decision possible. AMP is exploring options for the repower or redevelopment of the Gorsuch facility using newer, less environmentally impactful technology.
